Depending upon where the coffee is grown will determine the flavor that the beans have.  Some of the finest beans in the world are found in the Blue Mountain’s of Jamaica.  How the mountains got their name is from the blue mist that sometimes hovers over the mountains.

The Blue Mountains are located on beautiful island of Jamaica and provides the perfect plan that for growing some of the best beans in the world.  This area is a lush tropical region which receives plenty of rainfall.  This gives the soil the rich quality that is needed to grow gourmet blue mountain coffee.

7500 feet above the sea stands the Blue Mountains.  This provides for a gorgeous backdrop for the beautiful white beaches.  The mountain’s have approximately 194,000 acres that are protected as part of the rain forest.  Being a rain forest there are different plants and species of birds that are only found here.

Blue Mountain coffee beans were originally brought to the Jamaican Islands by Sir Nicholas Lawes who hoped the climate would prove productive for these special beans. Since 1728 these beans have continued to produce extremely well and today coffee is the biggest export of these islands. Blue Mountain coffee is one of the most sought after coffees in the world and Japan imports a large part of this coffee.

Blue Mountain coffee offers a bold, rich taste which is also smooth and sweet. It is grown on small farms instead of being mass produced. Often it is difficult to obtain because of the high demand for the succulent flavor which can only be found in the Jamaican mountain ranges. It is often referred to as the champagne of coffees because of its bold, rich taste. It is also one of the most expensive coffees in the world.

The Threat to Blue Mountain Coffee’s Existence

Blue Mountain coffee is closely monitored by local Jamaican officials to insure the supreme quality associated with its name. These officials grade the quality of the coffee bean before they place it in specific categories. There is close regulation with strict rules which must be met before the coffee bean is offered for sale.

There have been some recent climate changes that could pose a threat to Jamaica’s precious resource.  Many hurricanes pass through this area.  Recently hurricane Ivan had posed a threat to not only the island but the coffee industry.  Hurricane Ivan is only one of many hurricanes of recent times that have threatened this island.  In 1988, Gilbert had caused a lot of damage to the blue mountain coffee crop which raised the price of coffee dramatically.  Every time the island takes a hit it takes longer for them to recover.  This makes the Blue Mountain coffee and as Precious as gold itself.
